Kutch is a district of long distances. Bhuj is the headquarters, and the district is divided into ten talukas: Abdasa, Anjar, Bhachau, Bhuj, Gandhidham, Lakhpat, Mandvi, Mundra, Nakhatrana and Rapar. The sea lies to the west and south, with the Gulf of Kutch along the southern side and the Rann to the north and east. Gandhidham is described as the economic centre of the district and has a transport hub on its edge, called Transport Nagar. Kandla and Mundra are the two port names that appear on most trip sheets. A truck can leave a yard in the morning and spend most of the day on one straight road. The owner who is not in the cab has only the driver's phone call, and that call is often cut by weak signal.
Port business shapes much of the district. Mundra is a privately run port on the Gulf of Kutch that handles containers, coal, fertilizer, farm goods, steel and vehicles, and a rail line links it to the main network at Adipur. Kandla is the older port near Gandhidham, and the timber trade around the Gandhidham and Kandla belt is large enough to support many sawmills. Trailers, chassis, loaders and forklifts move around these places all day, and many are rented for a few weeks at a time. A tracker that sticks to a steel frame in a minute suits this kind of short hire better than a fitted device. National Highway 41 runs from Samakhiali through Gandhidham and Mandvi toward Naliya in the west.
Away from the ports, the land gives a different set of loads. The Little Rann is known for salt, and the pans fill again after the monsoon water goes down, from about October. The workers called Agariyas run pump sets and haul salt for months. Cement plants, lignite, bauxite and gypsum work add heavy vehicles and machines in the interior. Farms in the Mandvi, Anjar and Bhuj belts grow kesar mango, dates, cumin and groundnut. Craft is a trade of its own, with Kutch embroidery, Rogan art and the weaving of Bhujodi. Tourists come for the white Rann near Dhordo in the cooler months, and Dholavira is a World Heritage site. With so many trades spread over such an area, every owner has a trailer, a pump or a crate somewhere out of sight.
