Patan district sits in the middle of North Gujarat, with Mehsana to its east and south-east, Banaskantha to the north-east, Vav-Tharad to the north, Surendranagar to the south, and Kutch and the Little Rann to the west. Its talukas are Patan, Siddhpur, Chanasma, Harij, Radhanpur, Santalpur, Saraswati, Shankheshwar and Sami. The Saraswati river, now largely dry, flows through the plains near Patan town and Siddhpur. The railway line from Ahmedabad and Mehsana reaches Patan and goes on to the north, and National Highway 68 passes through Chanasma toward Radhanpur on one side and Mehsana and Himmatnagar on the other, so heavy vehicles cross the district without stopping in a town.
Patan town has a long history as a trading and learning centre. Rani ki Vav, the stepwell that UNESCO lists as a World Heritage Site, and the Sahastralinga tank draw visitors, and the town is known for patola, the double ikat silk saree woven by hand. Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University and its colleges send students out to villages every day. Siddhpur has the sacred Bindu Sarovar and old merchant houses, and a big gathering comes there in the month of Kartik. Shankheshwar is an important Jain temple town. On festival days, rented tents, stalls and buses fill the roads, and most of that gear belongs to someone who is not on site.
Away from the towns, the work is farm and energy. Crops such as cumin, castor and cotton go from fields in Radhanpur, Harij and Santalpur to market yards in Patan, Unjha and Mehsana, over long dry roads with few repair shops. The Charanka solar park near Patan is a widely known solar site in Gujarat, and solar contractors bring cranes, cable drums, panel frames and trailers to open land. Equipment that works in a field for months and returns to a yard in another district is hard to follow with phone calls alone. A battery tracker on the frame gives the owner a map instead.
