Mehsana district lies on the road and rail corridor between Ahmedabad and the north. It has ten talukas: Mehsana, Kadi, Visnagar, Vijapur, Unjha, Vadnagar, Kheralu, Satlasana, Jotana and Becharaji. Banaskantha lies to the north, Patan and Surendranagar to the west, Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad to the south and Sabarkantha to the east. Mehsana town is a railway junction, and lines run from it to Ahmedabad, Patan and the north. Trucks coming down from Rajasthan and going up from Ahmedabad pass through the district all day, so a trailer parked in Mehsana may have come from two states away.
Unjha is the district's most famous market. It is described as a major trading place for cumin, fennel and isabgol, and buyers and farmers come to its market yard from Rajasthan, other parts of Gujarat and Saurashtra. Spice packing units and exporters work around it, and Mundra port is the sea route for export orders. Mehsana town hosts the head office of the Mehsana district milk producers' union, which gathers milk from village societies, and cattle feed and equipment go the other way. A lorry with sacks of seed or feed is easy to follow on its trip to the yard but hard to follow after it leaves the weighbridge.
Oil adds another layer. ONGC has drilled hundreds of wells in the district, and contractors who serve them move pipes, pumps and service units on trailers over rough field roads. In the south-west, the Mandal-Becharaji region has become an auto hub with a large car plant and suppliers around it. Becharaji itself is a pilgrim town, Modhera has its sun temple on the Pushpavati river, and Vadnagar is a heritage town, so tourist buses and rented stage gear keep moving on festival days. This mix of farm trade, oil, factories and temples creates plenty of loads that are rented, shared or parked for days.
