Bhavnagar district lies in the south-east of the Saurashtra peninsula. Ahmedabad district is to the north-east, Botad to the north-west and Amreli to the west, while the Gulf of Khambhat wraps the east and south. The city of Bhavnagar is the district headquarters, and the talukas include Bhavnagar, Sihor, Umrala, Gariadhar, Palitana, Mahuva, Talaja, Ghogha, Jesar and Vallabhipur. Bhavnagar Terminus is the main railway station, the city has an airport, and the port has a rail link. Ghogha is a smaller port town, and a roll-on roll-off ferry has linked it with Dahej across the gulf. Trucks here start from many corners of one long coastline, so a trailer that leaves a yard in the morning may be in another taluka by evening.
The coast carries the district's heaviest work. The Alang and Sosiya ship recycling yards stand on the gulf, and dismantled hulls turn into steel plates, pipes and fittings that dealers truck out to buyers inland. In Bhavnagar city, diamond cutting and polishing is a large trade, and the district also has salt works, plastic filament and rope units, food processing and some engineering shops. All of these send goods out on hired trailers, and most owners hear about a delay only when the driver calls. A BT900 stuck to the chassis or the load itself gives the owner his own view of the road.
Farms add another layer. Mahuva has a market yard that is known for onions, and coconut plantations grow around it. The district also produces guava, citrus, banana and chiku, and cotton is a major crop. The Shetrunji river drains through Palitana and Talaja towards the gulf, with an irrigation dam on it near Palitana, while pilgrims come in numbers to the Jain temples on the Shatrunjaya hill. Velavadar, a grassland national park for blackbuck, draws visitors from the Bhavnagar side. Farm trolleys, hired tents and caterers' trucks all move through this belt in turns and are hard to follow without a map.
