Amreli is a Saurashtra district with a long sea coast on the Arabian Sea and the edge of the Gir forest to the east. Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Rajkot and Botad are among the districts it touches. Amreli town is the headquarters, and the taluka towns include Savarkundla, Bagasara, Lathi, Babra, Lilia, Dhari, Khambha, Rajula, Jafrabad and Kunkavav-Vadia. Goods rarely stay inside the district. A truck that loads cotton at one end may unload in Rajkot or Bhavnagar, and a coastal trailer can cross two or three districts before it is back, which is where an owner's guesswork begins.
Pipavav port, near Rajula, is the district's gateway to the sea. It handles container, bulk, liquid and roll-on roll-off cargo, and a rail link built for the port also serves it. Trailers and chassis shuttle between the port, its yards and customers inland. Jafrabad and Rajula also have fishing activity, and Jafrabad has salt pans. Inland, Savarkundla is known for a weighing-scale industry that makes mechanical scales and assembles electronic ones. Babra has more than fifty ginning factories and a small gem-cutting trade, Bagasara has gold plating work, and oil mills operate across the district. Each of these sends goods out on hired vehicles.
Farms set the rhythm of the year. The main crops are groundnut, cotton, sesame, bajri, wheat and gram, and the area around Dhari and Savarkundla is known for Kesar mango orchards. The Khodiyar dam stands on the Shetrunji river near Dhari, and the soil in parts of the district is black and heavy, so tractor trolleys are a common sight on village lanes. Rain in the monsoon can wash out small roads and bridges. For an owner of trolleys, harvesting machines or pump sets, a battery tracker that needs no wiring is easier to live with than a fitted unit.
