Rajkot district lies in the middle of the Saurashtra peninsula and has a long list of talukas, among them Gondal, Jetpur, Dhoraji, Upleta, Jasdan, Lodhika, Paddhari, Kotda Sangani and Jam Kandorna besides the city blocks. Morbi is to the north, Surendranagar and Botad are to the east, Amreli and Junagadh lie to the south, and Porbandar and Jamnagar to the west. Rajkot Junction is the main railway point, and the airport at Hirasar serves the city. The Aji and Nyari rivers that pass the city are dry for most of the year and fill only in the July to September monsoon, so the roads, not the rivers, carry the trade. A load that leaves a Rajkot yard crosses a district line within a few hours, which is why owners like to see where it stands without a phone call.
Metal work is the first thing most people name. Rajkot has a large foundry trade, mostly grey iron castings for the home market, along with forging, machine tools, CNC work, bearings, gears, auto parts and diesel engines. Submersible pumps have long been a local product, and smaller trades make watch parts and kitchen knives. The clusters are spread out: the Aji area, Gondal Road, Bhavnagar Road, Sapar-Veraval, Metoda and Lodhika each hold units that send finished parts out on pallets, in steel bins and on hired trailers. A small unit with no fleet of its own still has to trust a transporter, and a magnetic tracker on the pallet frame turns that trust into a map.
Beyond the factories, Rajkot is a trading district. Jetpur is known for cotton and silk saree printing and dyeing, and market yards at Gondal, Jetpur, Dhoraji and Jasdan handle farm produce from the Saurashtra belt, where groundnut and cotton are staple crops. The city also has a busy gold and jewellery market and many builders who rent out shuttering, scaffolding and mixers. Most of this cargo and equipment travels with little or no fitted electronics. A battery device that can be moved from one trailer or machine to another fits this kind of mixed, small-scale movement better than a wired unit tied to one vehicle.
