Junagadh district sits in the Saurashtra part of Gujarat. Rajkot lies to the north, Porbandar to the north-west, Amreli to the east and Gir Somnath to the south-east, while the Arabian Sea touches the south and west. Its talukas include Junagadh city and rural, Keshod, Malia, Manavadar, Mangrol, Mendarda, Vanthali, Visavadar and Bhesan. The city has a railway junction on the Rajkot to Somnath line, and a highway connects it to Rajkot and Veraval. Keshod has the only airport in the district. A truck leaving Junagadh therefore has choices in nearly every direction, and its owner cannot assume which one the driver took.
The trades are mixed. Junagadh is a major producer of groundnut and garlic in Gujarat, so oil mills, ginning units and market yards fill the farm roads in the harvest months. Cement is made in the district from local limestone, and some power and agro-based units operate as well. Mangrol is a harbour town where the fish industry is important. Tourism adds more vehicles: Uparkot fort, the Ashokan rock edict, Sakkarbaug zoo and the Girnar Jain temples bring cars and buses, and a ropeway on Girnar has opened up the hill to more visitors. Gir forest also reaches into the district.
Fairs set a different calendar. The Mahashivratri fair at the Bhavnath temple, below Girnar, brings a very large gathering each year, and the Girnar Parikrama draws walkers around the hill. Stalls, stages, sound systems, water tanks and catering sets move in and out for days on hired trucks. Many of them belong to small owners who rent them to local committees and are not always present. A battery tracker that needs no wiring is easy to pass from one load to the next, which is how such rental gear is usually handled.
