Devbhoomi Dwarka was created on 15 August 2013 out of Jamnagar district. Its headquarters is Khambhalia, also written Jamkhambhaliya, and its talukas are Khambhalia, Dwarka, Kalyanpur and Bhanvad. The district lies on the Okhamandal peninsula and the coast of the Gulf of Kutch, with the Arabian Sea to the west. Jamnagar is its eastern neighbour, and Porbandar lies to the south-east. Dwarka has a railway station on the Western Railway, Okha is the terminus of the line, and the nearest airport is at Jamnagar. Because the peninsula is narrow, most heavy traffic uses the same few roads.
Dwarka town is a pilgrim centre. The Dwarkadhish temple, also called Jagat Mandir, stands near the Gomti creek, and Janmashtami in August or September brings crowds for night-long celebrations. Okha is the harbour town, and the Sudarshan Setu, a cable-stayed bridge opened on 25 February 2024, joins Okha with Bet Dwarka island. Cabs, tempo travellers and buses carry visitors between these places all year, and operators with several vehicles need to know which one is waiting at which parking lot.
Industry sits along the coast too. Mithapur, near Okha, is the home of Tata Chemicals, which makes soda ash and salt and runs a cement plant that uses the soda ash waste, and the Tatas took over the Okha Salt Works in 1939. Vadinar, on the Gulf side, has an offshore oil terminal and a refinery, and Salaya and Okha are ports. Wind farms stand near the coast. Fishing boats land their catch at Okha and nearby harbours, and small pickups carry it inland. These loads are handled by many small owners and contractors, and few use wired devices.
